Retaining Wall Installation Sequence Guide

Correct installation sequencing is critical to retaining wall performance. A retaining wall can use good sleepers and strong steel, but still fail if the installation process is rushed or completed in the wrong order.

This guide explains the general sequence used for concrete sleeper retaining walls. It is not a substitute for project-specific engineering or professional installation advice, but it helps explain how the major parts of the wall system fit together.

Planning and Set-out

The first step is confirming the wall alignment, levels, site access, services, drainage outlet and engineering requirements. This is where many problems should be identified before excavation starts.

Site conditions matter. Reactive clay, basalt rock, fill material, access limitations and existing structures can all affect the wall build.

Why Retaining Wall Sequencing Matters

Retaining wall construction is often approached as a straightforward landscaping project, however sequencing mistakes are one of the major causes of long-term wall performance issues.

A retaining wall may initially look straight and structurally sound, but poor sequencing can create hidden problems that only appear later.

For example:

  • Drainage installed too late
  • Backfill placed too early
  • Uneven compaction
  • Surface water entering unfinished walls
  • Sleeper loading before posts are ready

These issues often contribute to movement, settlement and drainage failure over time.

Treating retaining wall installation as a system rather than a collection of separate steps generally leads to stronger long-term outcomes.

Excavation and Post Holes

Once the wall alignment is confirmed, post holes are bored or excavated to the required depth and diameter. Post embedment is critical because the below-ground section of the post resists the force applied by the retained soil.

Inadequate embedment is one of the common causes of retaining wall movement.

Steel Post Installation

Steel posts are installed to line, level and spacing requirements. Common retaining wall steel sizes include 100UC, 150UB, 150UC and 200UC, depending on engineering and site requirements.

The posts are then concreted into position and allowed to gain sufficient strength before the wall is loaded.

Sleeper Installation

Concrete sleepers are placed between the steel posts once the post system is ready. Sleepers need to be installed carefully to maintain alignment and avoid uneven loading.

Drainage Installation

Drainage should be installed before final backfilling. A typical drainage system may include 20 to 40 mm scoria, 100 mm socked agricultural pipe, geofabric, 200 um membrane and connection to LPOD.

Backfilling before drainage is complete is a common construction error. It can trap water behind the wall and increase long-term failure risk.

Backfilling and Compaction

Backfill should be placed in a controlled manner. Uneven or excessive compaction near the wall can create additional loading. Heavy equipment should not be used close to the wall unless the wall has been designed and constructed for that loading.

Final Checks

Before the project is complete, drainage outlets, wall alignment, surface water flow and retained ground levels should be checked.
