Retaining wall height has a major impact on material selection, engineering requirements, drainage design and installation method. Low Retaining Walls
Lower retaining walls are commonly used for garden beds, minor level changes, landscaping and small boundary adjustments. These walls may appear simple, but they still need correct drainage and installation.
Even a low wall can fail if water builds up behind it, if the posts are installed poorly or if uncontrolled surface runoff places additional pressure on the wall.
Medium Height Retaining Walls
Medium-height retaining walls are common across residential construction, especially on sloping blocks and cut-and-fill subdivision sites. These walls often require more careful steel selection, drainage planning and backfill control.

Large Retaining Walls

Why a 1200mm Retaining Wall is not Always the Same
One of the biggest misconceptions in retaining wall construction is assuming that wall height alone determines how the retaining wall should be built.
In reality, two retaining walls with the same height can require completely different retaining wall systems depending on site conditions.
For example, a 1200 mm retaining wall in stable ground with no surcharge loading may require a very different steel profile, footing arrangement and drainage system compared with a 1200 mm retaining wall supporting a driveway, boundary fence or raised landscape area.
Across Melbourne’s western suburbs, reactive clay and cut-and-fill subdivision sites can significantly increase the pressure acting on retaining walls. Water movement, inconsistent fill material and changing ground conditions all influence retaining wall performance.

Surcharge Loading and Wall Height
Wall height is only one factor. A lower wall with vehicle surcharge or fence loading can sometimes be more demanding than a taller wall with no surcharge.
Common surcharge sources include driveways, parked vehicles, sheds, pools, buildings, boundary fences and raised landscape areas. These loads must be considered when selecting steel, post spacing and footing requirements.
Retaining Wall Terraces and Split-Level Sites
